"As
a musician, activist, and universal citizen, I thank the UNITED
NATIONS GLOBAL INITIATIVE TO
FIGHT
HUMAN TRAFFICKING for allowing the Ricky Martin Foundation to share
our commitment to end
this
horrible crime. Since this modern day form of slavery has no
geographical boundaries, the truly international
reach
of this unprecedented beep is an essential platform to combat this
global nightmare. My commitment toward
this
cause was born from a humbling experience. In my 2002 trip to India I
witnessed the horrors of human
trafficking
as we rescued three trembling girls living on the streets in plastic
bags. Saving these girls from
falling
prey to exploitation was a personal awakening.
I immediately knew the Foundation had to fiercely battle this scourge.
That was six years ago… Since then the Foundation expanded
and launched PEOPLE FOR CHILDREN, an
international
initiative that condemns child exploitation. The project’s goal is
to provide awareness, education and
support
for worldwide efforts seeking the elimination of human trafficking -
with special emphasis on children.
This unscrupulous market
generates anywhere from $12 to $32 billion dollars annually, an amount
only surpassed
by
the trafficking of arms and drugs… My hope is to ------------- every
child the right to the be a child through a
non-for
profit organization conceived as a vehicle to enforce their basic
human rights in partnership with other
organizations,
social responsible corporations, and individuals SOLUTIONS
ABOUND IF WE WORK IN ALLIANCES
In our evolution, we
discovered that we are not alone in this fight. Human beings share the
capacity to unite and
work
together. As a Foundation headquartered in the Western Hemisphere we
have been privileged to partner with
many
multilateral organizations.
In
a joint effort with the Inter American Development Bank and the
International Organization for Migration, we
launched
“Call and Live!” -the FIRST regional campaign to combat human
trafficking in the Americas... Already
operating
in Peru, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic,
dozens of lives have been saved
through
hotlines that have received over 33,000 phone calls and fostered
hundreds of investigations.
The
toll free number offers a call to action that enables the public to
provide valuable information about suspected traffickers.
In 2008, at least four other Latin American countries will join the
campaign and hopefully more lives will be saved.
This
crime goes on every day in all parts of the world. The United States
is not the exception. Call and Live! will be launched
in
Washington DC this spring. (www.llamayvive.org)
The Call and Live! Campaign has proven to be effective as a “data
collection tool” and a means for identifying gaps in local
capacity
to serve victims and respond to cases. It has encouraged more
countries to ------------- national hotlines which would
help
build more global anti-trafficking infrastructure. Launching a
national hotline may be a CONCRETE STEP that every
country
should take to fight trafficking. It is fairly straightforward, it is
easily publicized, and it provides a common rallying
point
for government and NGO efforts.
Unfortunately, atrocities committed against children are also rampant
ONLINE. Convinced that knowledge is the most powerful
tool,
the Foundation and Microsoft Corporation have responded by launching
“Navega Protegido” in the Caribbean and Central America.
This online child safety
campaign consists of a website (www.navegaprotegidoeninternet.org)
with videos and other educational materials
that
provide teachers, students and parents tools to protect children from
the dangers of Internet such as pornography and sexual predators.
Governments and law
enforcement also have an important role to play to ensure that
children are protected around the globe from this type
of
exploitation. Every country must have legislations in place against
child pornography.
After testifying before
the US Congress in the fall of 2006, I realized that my Foundation had
to be a part of a growing movement to eradicate
human
slavery. This led me back to Washington, D.C. and my Foundation became
part of the Action Group to End Human Trafficking and
Modern
Day Slavery. (www.actiongroup.org)
The organizations that make up the Action Group have done what many
thought impossible, come together to support a shared
LEGISLATIVE
AGENDA
without getting bogged down on INDIVIDUAL AGENDAS.
I am certain that our
voices together with the power of other organizations that work
against this horrible crime, will continue to galvanize efforts
to
PREVENT, SUPRESS and PUNISH human trafficking.
CHANGING ATTITUDES and HUMAN BEHAVIOR is difficult, but NEVER forget
that multiple small triumphs over a long period of time
are
tantamount to social change.
As a Foundation that
supports the objectives of this HISTORIC beep which aims to put this
crime on the global agenda, be certain that:
We will continue to tell the world that human trafficking exists; we
will keep educating the masses; and we WILL keep working on
PREVENTION,
PROTECTION
and PROSECUTION MEASURES in our campaigns to alleviate the factors
that make children, women and men vulnerable to
the
MOST VICIOUS VIOLATION of human rights.
HUMAN TRAFFICKING HAS NO
PLACE IN OUR WORLD TODAY.
I URGE YOU TO
JOIN OUR FIGHT".
Inter-American Development Bank meeting set
for Miami Beach
It's billed as one of the
biggest business events ever in South Florida, with as many as 8,000
attendees likely including President George W. Bush,
the presidents of Mexico and
Brazil, pop star Ricky Martin and Microsoft founder Bill
Gates.
Organizers are preparing for the annual meeting of the Inter-American
Development Bank to be held April 4-8 at the Miami Beach
Convention
Center. It's the first time the
meeting convenes in Florida since 1987 and the first with a strong
business and philanthropy focus.
The host committee aims to provide $7 million in cash and in-kind
contributions for the mega-event, and about half of that has been
secured
from companies in Miami-Dade,
Broward and Palm Beach counties, chairman Jorge Arrizurieta said.
Companies are donating to
support business with Latin America and the Caribbean, South Florida's
top trade partner. And their executives
can network at the meeting,
said Mitchell Berger, the Fort Lauderdale lawyer heading up fund-raising
for the host committee.
"The IDB is responsible for infrastructure growth in Latin America
and the Caribbean. Without that, the Latin American market doesn't
mature,
" Berger said.
"South Florida is a net exporter of goods and services largely
because of Latin America and depends on that growth."
The meeting comes as the Washington-based bank funded by governments
shifts its focus under new leadership. The IDB now seeks to boost
the role of business and
philanthropy to help develop economies in Latin America and the
Caribbean.
Gates is to attend the meeting, partly because the Bill and Melinda
Gates Foundation is partnering with the IDB to expand its work in
the
region of more than 500
million residents. The Seattle-based group, with a $37 billion-plus
endowment, had focused overseas work largely on Africa.
Puerto Rican singing star Martin is expected, because he's been working
through his Ricky Martin Foundation on an IDB campaign to fight
human
trafficking, including
trafficking of women and girls for the sex trade. Martin appears in ads
urging residents to call hotlines for help in Latin American countries.
IDB President Luis Moreno, formerly Colombia's ambassador to the United
States, hopes the presence of Gates, Martin and other high-profile
donors can
encourage greater philanthropy
for Latin America, where one-third of residents live on less than $2 a
day.
Moreno seeks help not only from U.S.-based groups but also from the rich
within Latin America. They've traditionally been less generous than U.S.
counterparts,
partly because their
governments generally haven't rewarded philanthropy with tax breaks the
way the United States does. And some Latin Americans have feared
that big donations would put
them at greater security risk, he said.
"We hope Gates' participation can help awaken solidarity from other
business leaders and stimulate changes in tax laws," Moreno said.
In South Florida, companies committed to sponsor the IDB meeting include
finance groups such as Citibank, Wachovia and Stanford
Financial; technology
firms including Cisco
Systems, Hewlett-Packard, Lucent and Alcatel; delivery
giant FedEx; plus automakers Audi and GM, host
committee chairman Arrizurieta said.
Organizers are reaching out beyond Miami-Dade county, since the event
promotes all of South Florida for business as one region.
"We may not view ourselves as a region, but the rest of the world
does," fundraising coordinator Berger said. "If a company
ships through Port Everglades or the Port
of Miami, they don't see a
difference. It's all South Florida."
The IDB features 47 countries as members, with 26 nations that borrow
its funds. In 2007, the bank approved $9 billion in new financing, the
largest volume since 1999.
It long has ranked as the top
source of multilateral finance for the Latin American region.
Happy New Year to everybody and we are back
from holidays.

Latin star RICKY MARTIN will be honoured for his contribution to
music and charitable work for children in Puerto Rico.
The singer - who created the non-profit Ricky Martin Foundation to
advocate for children's rights - will be saluted at the
San Sebastian Street Festival on 17 January (08).
The 36-year-old is said to be thrilled to receive the honour.
Ricky Martin was "livin la vida
loca", surrounded by hundreds of shrieking female fans, as
he saw himself immortalised in concrete with a star on the
Hollywood Walk of Fame.
"My work has been recognised. It
will stay here forever, hopefully," Martin said after the
ceremony. "I'm so motivated right now, we'll see where this
takes me."
His swivelling hips and chart-topping
hits have made him a pop music juggernaut around the world, and
fans could not stop screaming his name as his star was unveiled.
"This is an incredible
moment," Martin, wearing a striped shirt and dark suit and
tie, told the crowd. "Everything I do, I do with love and
passion."
Martin, 35, started the Ricky Martin
Foundation to help children in need seven years ago and has
spoken out against human trafficking and sexual exploitation.
The Grammy-winning singer is one of
Puerto Rico's top-selling artists, with hits like She Bangs and
Livin' La Vida Loca, the latter a No 1 hit around the world.
Martin has sold more than 60 million
albums as a solo artist.
His star, the 2,351st awarded, was
placed outside the Virgin Megastore at Hollywood Boulevard and
Highland Avenue.
Ricky
Martin: All grown up and singing for the
children
By
JORDAN LEVIN
Ricky Martin claims to
have slowed down, but it seems like he's just
channelling his apparently limitless energy into
different places: His work with his Ricky Martin
Foundation helping and publicising the plight of
children trapped into sexual slavery and
prostitution, himself and, oh yes, his
unstoppable musical career, which took him to
arenas around the world this year in the most
ambitious production in his, and possibly Latin
pop music, history.
The second leg of his
Black and White Tour winds up at Madison Square
Garden on Sunday. Then it's off to get a star on
Hollywood's Walk of Fame on Oct. 16, and his
four nominations for the Latin Grammys on Nov.
8.
He's an intense guy.
"There was a
moment where I said to myself I'm going to quit
my life on stage to focus on philanthropy,"
Martin said recently from Los Angeles. "And
my mentors in philanthropy, my gurus, said, `Are
you crazy? You don't understand the power music
gives you.' The fact that I can stand in front
of 20,000 people every night while I'm on tour
gives me a fantastic tool to spread the
word."
On the other hand, he
could bury himself in his career.
"It would be very
easy for me to jump on this creative mode and
forget about everything but music and being on
stage," Martin says. But the experience of
truly living the celebrity "vida loca"
taught him something, as did the two-year
sabbatical he took in its wake. "You become
a workaholic and it's very dangerous. You have
to know how to balance your life."
So where he used to
perform six days a week on tour, now he takes an
additional day off in between to read and visit
with friends.
"It's very
important to take my time off, to focus on my
spirit, my mind, my physical body. If you
divided my life into sections now it's three for
me and one for music. Before it was the other
way around."
Martin is passionate
about the horrors of child sexual trafficking,
which he confronted seven years ago while
visiting a friend in India who ran an orphanage
that rescued young girls forced into
prostitution.
"That was a big
slap in the face," Martin says. "I
thought I had seen it all _ and I met a hundred
girls in this orphanage and some of them had
been forced into prostitution or pornography. I
started educating myself and the more I knew the
angrier I got."
A portion of the ticket
sales from the Black and White tour go to
Martin's foundation, which has recently
partnered with the Bill Gates Foundation and the
InterAmerican Development Bank on efforts to
educate people and prevent child sexual
trafficking in Latin America.
He's comfortable that
his success feeds his humanitarian work.
"Music gave me the
opportunity to go round the world and see things
I wouldn't see sitting at home," he says.
"Without music I
wouldn't be able to talk about this. I don't
want to blow myself up, but now that I'm working
with this issue people are talking about
this."

Ricky Martin loosens up and gets
his mojo backBY PABLO CALVI
Wednesday,
October 10th 2007, 4:00 AM
Ricky Martin's acclaimed 'Black
& White' tour comes to Madison Square Garden Sunday.
The man who led the Latin
crossover charge is in full retreat — not that he minds.
Ricky Martin is at the top of his
game — with a raved-about CD, an acclaimed world tour
coming to Madison Square Garden Sunday, and a star at the
Hollywood Walk of Fame two days later.
And all of this by going back to
singing in Spanish ... and just chillin'. "The idea
of that record ["MTV Unplugged"] is to go back
to when there was still some purity in my life," says
the Puerto Rican superstar during
a break from his "Black and
White" tour.
It's not that he regrets his
"Livin' La Vida Loca"-infused ascension. "I
don't complain, it was an amazing experience, but it was
really hard," says the 35-year-old Los Angeles
resident.
"I had to be thinking all
the time about different markets, different tastes, what
would be my next step, my next strategy.... I became
obsessed with success," he adds.
And all the attention ended up
getting the best of him.
"I was feeling that I needed
everybody to love me more and more.... I became dependent
on that acceptance," he says. "But now I realize
that I was off-centered, rather off-balanced. Fortunately,
now I'm in a different plane,
both physically and
spiritually."
How did he do it? After spending
six years — and three albums — courting the
English-speaking market, Martin just returned to his tried
and true pop en español origins.
"If you take 'Vuelve' [his
1998 album] and you jump 'Ricky Martin' [his 1999 English
album] and go to [2003's] 'Almas del Silencio,' you can
see a clear evolutive process," he says. "If you
eliminate the CDs in English,
you see that what I have done in
Spanish is part of a logical process.
"And you know what? Now
music critics like me much more than before. And the fun
part is that I'm just doing whatever I feel like
doing."
The "Black and White"
tour — which is being turned into a live CD to be
released Nov. 6 — has been selling out stadiums in Latin
America, Europe and the U.S. Critics have praised Martin's
delivery,
energy and maturity.
The ex-Menudo is also riding high
on the success of "MTV Unplugged" — which is
up for four Latin Grammys, even though he stayed away from
his bigger hits.
"I never intended this
record to be a 'greatest hits.' If that was the case, I
would have included 'La Vida Loca,' 'La Copa de la Vida,'
'Te Extraño, Jard Te Olvido, Te Amo,' " he
says.
Released last November, "MTV
Unplugged" has become a career defining record for
Martin, who traded immaculate productions in favor of
authenticity and a more natural flow.
Martin also has fond memories of
the creation process for the album, for which he took
eight months off while taking acting classes in Los
Angeles. "I wish every record I make will be like
that," he says.
"I felt loosened up,
detached from everything," he says. "The ego
disappeared and emotions would just flow by themselves.
It was the musicians and me. It's
not that there was no audience. There was a beautiful
audience, but we were on another dimension."

Review: The 35-year-old Puerto
Rican heartthrob delivered a hip-shaking show
with a more mature
approach.

Ricky Martin promised his fans he
would leave his soul on stage and he delivered.
The 35-year-old Latin heartthrob
offered his audience renditions of the best of his music
while exposing a bit of his humanitarian side Saturday
night at the Honda Center in
Anaheim.
Martin spoke to the crowd about
finally understanding the meaning of being grateful and
focusing on the solution for a better world.
"Without love there is no
solution," Martin told the audience.
On the first night of the second
leg of his Black and White tour, Martin captivated the
audience with his jaw-dropping signature dance moves and
his maturity on stage.
Martin who burst into
the American music scene after his performance at the 1999
Grammy Awards opened his show to "Pegate,"
off his most-recent album "MTV Unplugged."
Then it was on to "Por
Arriva, Por Abajo," as audience members waved their
arms and attempted to mimic his sensual moves.
The show's energy fell flat when
a solo Eastern dancer in a golden headdress took the
stage, but was soon revived as Martin reappeared to
demonstrate his martial arts moves
during "Jaleo." The
Asian-infused version of "Maria" might have left
some fans disappointed, but it reflected Martin's
ever-evolving style.
After re-appearing barefoot in a
white T-shirt and jeans behind a screen, the Puerto Rican
crossover pioneer interpreted "Vuele," one of
the crowd's favorite songs of the night.
Martin greeted the ethnically
diverse audience, which included women and men of all
ages, and spoke briefly in English and Spanish during the
nearly two-hour show.
"I'm leaving you my soul
tonight on stage," he said. "This is the best of
my music and I hope you like it," he added as the
crowd grew louder.
Looking relaxed and confident,
Martin sat on a stool next to a piano before singing
"Gracias Por Pensar En Mi," which he described
as being one of his favorite songs.
He continued with one of his
early hits "Fuego de Noche, Nieve de Dia," as
the crowd bellowed.
As Martin went through another
wardrobe change, a screen came down showing Martin's bare
body covered in messages of hope such as "change your
life."
After singing a more subdued
version of "Livin' La Vida Loca," he told the
audience he is grateful because he is alive, because he
has friends, family and a career. Martin,
who serves as a UNICEF Goodwill
Ambassador who is active in the fight against the
exploitation of children, said there was a point in his
life when he did not understand the meaning of being
grateful.
During the reflective show, a
screen flashed the images many taken by Martin
during his travels around the world of maimed,
hungry and abandoned children, while he interpreted "Somos
La Semilla."
"We are the seed. We are the
seed of change," he told the audience.
Sitting on the edge of the stage,
he sang "Asignatura Pendiente," as he constantly
smiled at the audience.
The energy came back up as
dancers moved about the stage carrying torches and the
trumpets blasted to "Lola, Lola." Martin emerged
in a white outfit shaking his hips as he moved from
catwalk to catwalk,
driving the crowd wild.
The incredible dancing continued
with "La Bomba" on a raised platform.
But the night would not be
complete without "La Copa de la Vida," a song
that helped him grab the world's attention, launching him
onto the international scene.
He closed the show with "Talvez"
and "Tu Recuerdo" but not before saying a few
final words.
He said, seeing people in the
audience from different countries Argentina,
Korea, Japan, Mexico and of course the United States
come together through music was "the most
beautiful thing."
"Never stop speaking
Spanish," he said in Spanish.
I do apologise for the delay in
updating this site, I was sick with the bad flu, I did come out
ok,
while others here in Brisbane have lost
their lives.

San Juan, Puerto Rico (AHN) -
Grammy Award winning singer Ricky Martin wants to have
lots of kids and he would adopt them possibly "from
each continent." The 35-year-old unveiled his
family plans Wednesday during a press conference in
Puerto Rico, where he is scheduled to perform this
weekend.
"It's something we want to
begin to create this year, a family of many colors,"
AP quoted Martin as saying.
Martin said he won't use his
celebrity status for a quicker adoption, nor does he
expects a special treatment.
"I want to do it right. I
don't want any problems or misunderstandings ... Some
think as celebrities we can manipulate the system to
have a quicker adoption," he said.
Martin was named a Goodwill
Ambassador to UNICEF in 2004. He established the Ricky
Martin Foundation in Puerto Rico to advocate for the
welfare of children around the world.

Ricky Martin reigned as king at the
50th anniversary of the Puerto Rican parade on Sunday as tens of
thousands gathered to celebrate their homeland.
The pop star was joined by Mayor
Michael Bloomberg for a ceremonial ribbon cutting before
ascending a float that promoted the Ricky Martin Foundation,
which advocates for child welfare
around the world.
Fans screamed as the float made its way
up Fifth Avenue. "We were about to pass out, we were so
happy to see him," said Tania Ochoteco, 33, of the Bronx.
More screams greeted last year's grand
marshals Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez, who made a surprise
repeat appearance on separate floats.
New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer and Puerto
Rican Gov. Anibal Acevedo-Vila joined Bloomberg at the head of
the parade.
There were marching bands, beauty
queens and uniformed city workers dancing to salsa blaring from
scores of floats.
TV personality Geraldo Rivera held a
flag in one hand and a microphone in the other.
Although it was impossible to estimate
the crowd, hundreds of thousands have attended in recent years.
